This design is for a developer
of new infill housing on empty lots in an inner
city neighborhood that is listed on the National
Registry of Historic Places. The design accomplishes
two main goals: one to be compatible with the
existing historic architecture and two, to provide
dwellings that are more affordable than a single
family home. A duplex that looks like a single
family home in the craftsman style was the solution.
Although the compatible architecture was not
required, the developer felt strongly that the
new construction needed to continue the existing
style of the surrounding houses and not detract
from the sense of community. The exterior captures
typical Craftsman revival style in open rafter
tails, brackets, front porches, columns with
large base elements, and detailing at attic
vents. |
